type of object, using
compound curves, can be difficult to create in some 3D Modelling
software. MAX software has no difficulty using simple
"splines"
or vector lines to create the object. The technique is
known as "Lofting". This term is derived from wooden
shipbuilding, where deck
profiles were "lofted" into position, defining the form of the
ship hull. With the correct approach complex objects can be "Lofted". This panel is a relatively simple example which demonstrates the usefullness and simplicity of the technique. "Lofting" is an ideal means for the CNC user to create custom profiles and mouldings very quickly. Often such objects require only an outline shape and a straight line along which to perform the "Loft". There may seem to be many steps in this tutorial. This is to very clearly illustrate this method to those who may never have tried "Lofting" objects previously. Each step is performed quickly, taking very much longer to describe than to execute. It should be noted that images have been edited throughout to allow display of appropriate functions in the GUI. Careful examination of images is advised. New users will also find the gmax help of much assistance. |
