With the "Modify" panel in "Vertex" edit mode a selection is dragged around the lower corner vertex as shown.  The "Make First" button is used to nominate this vertex as the "first" vertex.

MAX software allocates numbers to vertices in splines and objects.  The "first" vertex is allocated as #1.  When "Lofting" it's important that "first" vertices line up to avoid unwanted deformations in the surface of the "Lofted" object.
